- On June 13, 2006, General Conway was nominated by President George Bush to become the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps. The nomination was confirmed by the Senate on 2 August 2006. On 13 Nov, General Conway was sworn in by Gen. Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff as the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
- General Conway’s personal awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (3), the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
